No Power, No Progress — Why Clean Energy Must Be at the Heart of Development

“No power, no progress” — it’s a truth we live with daily across Africa and the Caribbean. When clean, affordable energy isn’t prioritized, everything else begins to fall apart: public health, education, livelihoods, even safety.

Across many regions of Africa and the Caribbean, we see this reality every day. A clinic without reliable electricity can’t refrigerate vaccines. A girl can’t study after sunset without light. A farmer can’t preserve his harvest when the power fails. Energy isn’t just a technical issue; it’s the silent engine of social and economic development.

According to the Energy Progress Report 2025, more than 666 million people globally still live without electricity. This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a reflection of humanity’s unfinished business. Clean energy is the foundation that enables every Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) from health and education to gender equality and climate action.

At the African & Caribbean Energy Network (ACEN), we champion this truth every day. Our network exists to unite policymakers, innovators, investors, and advocates from across Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora to accelerate sustainable energy solutions. We promote dialogue, partnerships, and projects that strengthen energy access, equity, and resilience.

The data is clear: investments in renewable energy create three times more jobs than fossil fuels, while the World Health Organization estimates that switching to clean household energy could save 3.2 million lives annually. Clean energy empowers women entrepreneurs, supports young innovators, and fuels inclusive growth — especially in rural and underserved communities.

Yet despite the immense benefits, annual global financing for clean energy remains around $500 billion, less than half of what’s required to achieve universal access. Across Africa and the Caribbean, funding gaps, perceived investment risks, and regulatory challenges continue to delay progress. This is where leadership and collaboration must step in.

At ACEN, we’re calling for a new era of energy partnership — one rooted in shared purpose and trust. Governments must create clear, investable policies; financiers must look beyond short-term returns to long-term transformation; and regional collaboration must replace siloed approaches. Because one thing is certain: we cannot talk about a just transition while millions remain in the dark.

As the world races toward 2030, we must remember that SDG7 — ensuring access to affordable, reliable, sustainable, and modern energy for all — is not just another goal. It’s the goal that powers progress on all others. When we power homes, we power hope. When we empower women and youth, we empower economies.

It’s time to deliver on the promise made in 2015 — to light up every home, every school, every dream.

Because when energy works, everything works.
